Bronze Tiger Dedication Pryor High School

Dedication Ceremony

On July 8th, Pryor is going to have an all-school reunion. The district has already had many people call in to make reservations. Attendees of the reunion will have the opportunity to see the newly bestowed bronze tiger statue made by us for the Phillips family. The statue in the Burdick Center took eight months to complete and was donated by the Phillips family, Pryor alumni and made by All Classics Ltd (www.bronze-mascot.com).

On Friday, February 10th, PPS Superintendent, Don Raleigh expressed his appreciation to the Phillips family during the dedication ceremony. Raleigh spoke about the long history the Phillips have with Pryor Public Schools.

Raleigh noted that Milton and Idamae Phillips came to Pryor in 1947. Mr. Phillips taught math and coached. He retired in 1976 after 29 years with Pryor High School. Phillips taught for a total of 42 years and coached for 20 years.

Mr. Phillips was Mayes County Teacher of the Year in 1966 and president of Mayes County OEA from 1965-1966. While coaching in Pryor, he had 3 undefeated seasons in football. He passed away at age 85 in 1996.

Idamae Phillips retired in 1985 after 37 years in the Pryor School system. She taught at Whitaker School and Central grade school before moving to Roosevelt in 1962. She was principal at Roosevelt for 16 years. She passed away at age 94 in 2014.

Keith Phillips was a 1960 graduate of PHS. He was a 3 year letterman in football, basketball, and track. He was named to the All State football team in 1959 and played football at Denver and Tulsa Universities. He passed away at age 71 in 2014.

Janet Phillips Walls was a 1963 graduate of PHS. She was salutatorian of her class, PHS yearbook editor, Pep Club president, and Football Queen. She received a BS from Oklahoma State University and worked for IBM Corporation for 25 years. She also attributes her success to the foundation she received from her parents and from the Pryor School system.

The Phillips Family were always supportive of the athletic teams in Pryor as Mr. Phillips coached and Keith was involved in sports. Mr. and Mrs. Phillips continued their support long after their children graduated.

Mrs Phillips still had season tickets to PHS football games and attended games until her death in 2014. The statue will leave behind a lasting legacy for future and former generations at Pryor High School.
